Statement on Assassination of Minnesota House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman

Lawmaker’s Legacy Included Historic State Investments in Homelessness and Housing

June 17, 2025, Washington, D.C. — The National Alliance to End Homelessness today mourns the loss of Minnesota House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark. Speaker Hortman was a champion of public service and leader who helped usher historic investments in homelessness and housing during the state’s 2023 legislative session. Our thoughts are with her children who lost their mother and father, as well as our colleagues throughout the state of Minnesota who are now left grappling with the magnitude of this loss. The Alliance also wishes a full recovery to Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette, who were separately attacked.
