The President’s Budget Proposal Cuts $532 Million in Homelessness Funding

Here’s How Many People Could Be Served with that Investment

< 1 min

President Trump’s FY 2026 budget proposal calls for $532 million in cuts to the federal government’s Homeless Assistance Grants account. A new snapshot from the National Alliance to End Homelessness’ Homelessness Research Institute shows how many people could be served with those funds.

Homeless Assistance Grants are a key source of federal funding to support a variety of housing and service programs for individuals and families experiencing homelessness. Some of the housing types that these grants support are Housing Choice Voucher units, shelter beds, Permanent Supportive Housing units, and Rapid Re-Housing units. The President’s proposed cuts could house tens of thousands of people (see figure for specific numbers).

At a time when homelessness is on the rise in communities across the nation, these cuts would undoubtedly worsen the problem. Appropriately funding the programs included in the Homeless Assistance Grants account is critical for reversing this crisis.
