Secretary Fudge took leadership during unprecedented challenges for the nation, including the economic disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic, a severe affordable housing crisis, and rising levels of unsheltered homelessness. Under her strong leadership, Secretary Fudge worked on behalf of the Biden-Harris administration to make historic investments in affordable housing and homelessness. In 2022 alone, HUD’s House America initiative rehoused more than 140,000 people experiencing homelessness and added 40,000 units to the nation’s supply of affordable housing.
Furthermore, Secretary Fudge’s stalwart defense of the federal government’s commitments to fair housing and equal access to government-funded housing and shelter were invaluable at a time when racial, economic, and identity-based inequities are actively driving increases in homelessness.
The Alliance offers Secretary Fudge its best wishes, and looks forward with working with her successor to continue the work to end homelessness in the United States.
