We are beginning another week during a federal government shutdown. While the Alliance does not have any updates on that front or what changes may impact homelessness programs, I do want to share some encouraging developments.
Last week, House Republicans Andrew Garbarino (R-NY-2) and Nick LaLota (R-NY-1) led a Republican-only sign-on letter to HUD Secretary Turner. The letter asked the Department to “extend current CoC awards for an additional year,” citing the great potential for delays and financial constraints.
The letter resulted in 22 sign-ons. These legislators signed on because you have spoken up. And we need you to keep speaking up.
This letter shows that homelessness is a bipartisan issue. We shouldn’t assume that we can’t reach certain lawmakers based on party. Homelessness and housing impact all communities, and all Congressional districts. Because of your advocacy, lawmakers are more and more aware that this is a priority for their constituents.
Even though we can only do so much with the government shut down, lawmakers are still listening.
I encourage everyone to sign up for the Alliance’s Advocacy Alerts. We’ll email you when there are opportunities to take action, but we’ll also email you monthly with a roundup of important developments, trainings, or other pieces of information that might be helpful to inform your work.
As always, thank you all for your work, and please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Alliance.
Take Care,
Ann
