People experience unsheltered homelessness when they live outside or in places not meant for human habitation, like a car, tent, or abandoned building. About 275,000 people experienced unsheltered homelessness at last count in January 2024. Because homelessness ebbs and flows throughout the year, and people move in and out of shelters, many thousands more spend at least one night outside.
