At a time when homelessness is up in so many communities, there is a solution that is proven to work. Veteran homelessness has been cut in half since 2010, thanks to robust Congressional investments and a strong commitment to practices proven to end homelessness.
But rapid progress on veteran homelessness began to stall the year after Congress allocated fewer veteran-specific vouchers. Federally funded vouchers are stretched thin due to out-of-control rental costs, and veteran housing vouchers are reaching fewer households because their value has not kept up with skyrocketing rents.
The National Alliance to End Homelessness calls on Congress to scale up investments in veteran housing vouchers so that all veterans experiencing homelessness have access to the housing and services that they need. These investments are essential to honor the nation’s commitments to veterans. Scaling up these resources demonstrates to the nation that through robust investments, a commitment to best practices, and strong public will from our leaders, an end to all homelessness is possible.
