A new report, jointly authored by researchers at the Alliance and the University of Pennsylvania, sheds light on the estimated costs to end homelessness in America for one year.
This analysis finds that, based on 2022 data, homeless response systems only have the capacity to place 16% of households served in the nation’s shelters into permanent housing. An estimated $9.6 billion is needed to provide housing placements to everyone experiencing homelessness during a given year. Additional resources are required to ensure all placements meet the requirements of programs aligned with the Housing First model, an evidence-based approach to ending homelessness.
Federal budget cuts would move America further away from this budgetary goal. Those harmed include veterans. Though veteran homelessness has steadily declined, cuts to federal funding threaten this progress.
